I stay awake all night, calling Ari every few hours to make sure she’s ok—that’s concussion 101—and thank God, she is.

In the morning, Ollie comes over.

“You shouldn’t need alcohol to endure your own life, Wes,” he tells me when I explain what happened. What I did. “You shouldn’t need something to numb you. This is the life that you have created for yourself, after all.”

I wince.

That’s Ollie. No judgement, even though I deserve it. I deserve having him never talk to me again. But he just wants to help.

“I loathe myself,” I tell him, avoiding his eyes.

“I’m guessing it’s because of the accident,” he replies. “Not because of all the pining you’re doing for my sister.”

His sister. It still feels surreal. Ollie has been an only child as long as I’ve known him, and that’s since we were kids. It was so cruel of his mom to just casually call and tell him that she has another child. It still boggles my mind how amazing and painful things are going to get for both of them really soon.

I forget how miserable I am for a second and sit up.

“Me? Pining?” I scoff. “Please, since when?”

“Since that day on the L&H,” he replies, deadpan. “But I get it. Sometimes I still feel like I’m catching my breath from that day.”

“I was so scared,” I say quietly. “Still am. An experience like this shakes you up, doesn’t it?”

He nods. I don’t think even he realized how afraid I was and still am. But I can’t let fear rule my life. The night I kissed Ari at the club, I got scared for a whole different reason. It was as if she threw open a window with force, and bright, Greek summer sun came flooding into my sordid life.

I could no longer ignore the squalor.

I was angry and annoyed with her for it. Also, I was, and am, deathly scared at what she revealed. At what that kiss made me discover within me, the longing, the hunger. But I can’t let fear rule my life.

I take a deep breath. Ollie is waiting for me to speak, stretching his long legs in front of him. We’re lounging by my private pool in the hotel, the sun hot on our bare backs, golden sunlight sparkling on the still blue water. Tall, green trees reflect on our sunglasses from all around—Corfu is drowning in green and blue on all sides. It’s amazing how one single place on earth combines the savageness of mountains with the calmness of turquoise waters and the softness of silver-green olive gardens.

“IaskedGodtosavemelastnight.” There, I said it. It was barely audible, with no gaps between the words, but I said it. “I think.”

Ollie lowers his sunglasses and lifts a dark eyebrow at me over them. His blue eyes study mine with curiosity. I knew that he wouldn’t laugh at me. Not at this.

“And what happened?” he asks after a pause.

“I think God answered.”

He is silent, asking nothing, waiting to see if I’ll volunteer more.
